Adopting a Dog With Homeward Hounds
Before You Apply
Adopting a rescue dog is a rewarding experience, and at Homeward Hounds we work hard to match every dog with the right home. Our adoption process ensures that each dog is placed with a family whose lifestyle, experience, and environment suit their needs.
In return, we need a few things from you during the process:
Before You Apply
- Take a thorough look through our available dogs, please be entirely sure you are choosing a dog whose activity/energy level, personality, work drive fit your current lifestyle
- Research the breed of dog you think is best suited to you (including insurance costs, common health issues and specific care needs)
Completing Your Adoption Application
- Fill in the application as thoroughly and honestly as you can, we can't guarantee you'll be successful but we can suggest different dogs that may be better suited to your lifestyle and requirements
Home Check and Approval
- If we shortlist you following your application, we will invite you for a home-check via video call
- When successful, we will ask for a deposit to secure the dog and stop taking new applications
Your Dog’s Arrival
- On the day of your new dogs arrival, we will conclude a brief in person home-check, go through all the remaining adoption paperwork and ensure the new dog is settling well into your home
The 3-3-3 Rule for Rescue Dogs
- We will discuss our 3:3:3 guideline, which we expect you to follow in the initial settling period to ensure a smooth transition for the dog into its new home. In return, we expect your agreement in providing patience, effort, understanding, and the use of a trainer (which we can provide at an additional cost) if required
Spaying and Neutering Policy
- Every dog will be re-homed with a contract to spay/neuter. We ask that both surrenderer and adopter contribute wherever possible. Ethically, we believe this should only occur after the dog has had a settling period in their new home as not to disturb the bonding with their new owners in their new home. We require veterinary confirmation of the procedures completion within the agreed timeframe.
